James Gunn, who was appointed as one of the co-CEOs of DC Studios, thanks fans for their passionate support for the future of the DC Universe.
James Gunn thanks fans for their passionate support on social media for the future of the DC Universe. Ever since the completion of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger earlier this year, the studio has been reorganizing various aspects of the company, including the future of the DCU (formerly known as the DCEU.) With the goal to fully capitalize on the DC brand, the recently launched DC Studios is replacing the DC Films division, with Gunn and Peter Safran tapped as the new bosses. Under their leadership, Gunn will oversee the creative aspects of TV, film, and animation, while Safran tackles the business elements.
While the two CEOs have only been in the positions since November 1, Gunn and Safran are actively working on their 10-year plan for the DCU. Throughout the last few weeks, Gunn has shared on social media numerous teases about the future of the DCU, as well as getting fans more hyped for what DC Studios has in store. Gunn recently responded to one of the passionate fans that highlighted the big social media traction that the filmmaker’s posts have garnered over time. The DC Studios co-head couldn’t be more grateful for all the support, as he and Safran are “excited to be shepherding” the new age for the franchise.
How The DCU Will Be Changed Through DC StudiosSince Gunn and Safran only recently started to map out the future of the DCU across multiple mediums, it will likely be some time until the public gets more concrete details on what this means for the franchise’s future. However, this is definitely the step in the right direction that Warner Bros. Discovery has needed for years, especially as they strive to compete with Marvel Studios. Having not one, but two direct leaders in charge will, first off, help set a foundation from which they can now oversee DC’s TV, film, and animation presence.
Given the struggle that the DCU has faced over the last few years, DC Studios being created to help build a long-term plan partially gives the franchise a sense of stable direction. Even if that doesn’t involve Phases in the way that the MCU does, a decade-long plan can help stabilize how Gunn and Safran want to shape DC’s media presence. Whether they take place in the main DCU canon or in their own continuity, including The Batman, Joker, or the Arrowverse TV shows, DC Studios can set a sense of consistency, especially as they work with numerous creators. For the DCU, which is not getting rebooted but rather refocusing on what has worked and what is missing, this can go a long way, as long as Warner Bros. Discovery lets Gunn and Safran execute their ideas.
The DCU has without a doubt come a long way, as the franchise has continued to introduce new heroes and villains from page to screen. With HBO Max (which will be merged with Discovery Plus in spring 2023) also now existing as an additional platform for the DCU, Gunn and Safran will consistently be able to branch out, both theatrically and on streaming. Whether with DCU TV shows or original movies that take place inside or outside the franchise, it will be exciting to see what directions Safran and Gunn will take with the beloved comic book brand. Hopefully, as 2023 approaches, it won’t be long until DC Studios start roll
