Jordana Brewster Shares Her Hopes For Mia & The Overall Story

Fast X: Part 2
star Jordana Brewster shares what she hopes is next for Mia Toretto in the franchise and how she wants the next film to shake things up in terms of its story. Vin Diesel’s Dom and his family returned in 2023 with Fast X, with the cliffhanger ending paving the way for what might be the last movie in the Fast & Furious franchise. Diesel revealed last November that Fast X: Part 2 filming is now underway, and Mia, who was first introduced in the 2001 debut movie, is set to play a major role.

In a recent interview with Collider to promote her new horror movie, Heart Eyes, Brewster addresses Fast X: Part 2 and where she hopes the film will take Mia. The actor expresses interest in seeing her character become a more active participant in the action, which she says should be more like the earlier, more grounded movies in the franchise. Check out Brewster’s comment below:

“Yeah, big time. I would like to go back to the roots of the first one, kind of like what you were saying with Final Destination. I think it should be back in LA, I think it should be gritty, and I think Mia should go back to being part of a group that’s kicking some ass. She’s going to leave her mommy shoes behind.”

Vin Diesel Has Already Teased A Shift In Tone For Fast & Furious 11

The franchise’s core cast has become quite unwieldy, and this was a major complaint in the Fast X reviews. The introduction of so many new figures has meant that Mia has, in the last few movies, played a more minor role overall. Plus, the decision to keep Brian O’Connor, Mia’s husband, alive in the world of the movies after Paul Walker’s tragic death in 2013 has further limited Mia’s screen time, as the films are trying to preserve their sense of peace and happiness away from the fighting.

Fast X Fails Jordana Brewster’s Mia After Redeeming The Character In F9

F9 made immense progress with Jordan Brewster’s Mia, but the character’s role in Fast X ruined any improvement the cast fought hard for.

With recent installments having leaned into over-the-top action and CGI-heavy car stunts, Brewster’s comment could come as a breath of fresh air. Brewster’s hopes for the franchise also align with what Diesel himself has revealed, with the Dom actor having teased in multiple social media posts that, after the Fast X ending, the next movie will be going back to the franchise’s roots in terms of practical action and street racing. He also just revealed that LA will be the main setting for Fast X: Part 2, as seen in the post below:

Our Take On Brewster’s Hopes For Fast X: Part 2

It’s Time For The Fast Franchise To Return To More Grounded Action

Mia (Jordana Brewster) looks concerned in Fast X

Fast X gave Mia one standout action sequence, but it definitely feels like recent installments have struggled with exactly how to handle this character. Furious 7 (2015) gave Brian and Mia a satisfying sendoff, and every movie since then has had to try and preserve that while also ensuring that Mia still feels involved in the story in some way. As the potentially last movie in the franchise, Fast X: Part 2 will surely want to incorporate Brian again for one more goodbye, and this could further complicate just how Mia is utilized in the story.

As far as Brewster’s hopes for the tone and style of action, going back to the franchise’s roots would be a great way to send the Fast & Furious franchise out. Plus, after Fast X‘s budget ballooned to extreme proportions and made that movie a bit of a box office let-down, street-level action could help to keep costs down. Many questions remain about Fast X: Part 2, but Brewster is evidently hoping that Mia plays a big role in what’s to come.

Fast X‘s grossed $704 million worldwide on a reported budget of $340 million.
