Mickey 17 is said to be based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7 and centers on Pattinson’s eponymous character, an expendable employee working on the ice world of Niflheim who is frequently tasked with the most dangerous missions for a human expedition, frequently resulting in his death and regeneration through a clone with most of his memories intact. After going missing on a routine scouting mission, Mickey7 returns to his colony to find a new clone already working his Expendable duties, and must try and keep the dual existences under wraps to prevent their deaths. When the native alien species begin closing in on the colony, who are struggling to terraform the planet for humanity, Mickey7 will have to rise up and find a way to save both humanity and the local lifeforms.

Pattinson isn’t the only major name attached to the cast of Bong’s Mickey 17 as he is joined by Master of None star Naomi Ackie, Nope‘s Steven Yeun, Knives Out alum Toni Collette, Marvel Cinematic Universe vet Mark Ruffalo and The Capture‘s Holliday Grainger. Interestingly, Ruffalo is reportedly circling HBO’s series adaptation of Parasite, which will be set within the same universe as its source material and sees Bong returning to executive produce with Succession‘s Adam McKay. The show, which is currently up in the air with its development progress, was also intended to star Tilda Swinton, only for the Three Thousand Years of Longing actor to confirm she was no longer involved in the project.

With production running from August to this month, the release of the Mickey 17 teaser comes as a surprise, but a welcome one in helping to establish the chilling tone to come from the sci-fi thriller. Given there’s well over a year to go until the film hits theaters, it seems likely future looks at the movie won’t come for some time, but the knowledge that Warner Bros. are confident enough to set a release date for the film already point towards their excitement in bringing the collaboration between Bong and Pattinson to audiences. Fans of the two creatives will have to keep their eyes peeled for further news leading up to Mickey 17‘s March 29, 2024 release.
