Sinners director Ryan Coogler praises Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance in their fifth project together. The writer-director and actor have worked together on four critically acclaimed features before, including Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In Coogler’s upcoming supernatural horror movie, Jordan plays twin World War I veteran brothers, Smoke and Stack, who return home to start a blues club in 1930s Mississippi.
In an interview with Deadline, Coogler teased Jordan’s performance in Sinners, which will arrive in theaters on April 18. The director revealed that the role was written specifically for the actor, which would serve as a challenge because he knew Jordan is “very ambitious.” While Coogler has faith in Jordan’s abilities, the “execution” of the role was “incredibly difficult.” However, the actor exceeded his expectations. The director shared that Sinner includes “the two best performances” he’s ever seen from Jordan. Check out Coogler’s comments below:
It wasn’t hard, bro, to convince him. Mike’s very ambitious and you actually have a better chance to get him to say yes if the thing requires more of him. And I know that about him. I wanted to write a role for him that was worth his time and energy, where the execution of it was incredibly difficult. And honestly, I have more confidence in Mike and his abilities than anybody. And I did not expect him to be as good as he was in this. Just flat out, I think these two performances are the two best performances I’ve ever seen him give. And knowing who he is, Mike personally is very close to who the Stack character is, but seeing him become Smoke, as somebody who’s a friend of his, was very unnerving.

Sinners Gives Michael B. Jordan His Most Challenging Role To Date
Sinners‘ official trailer has offered a first look at Jordan’s “unnerving” transformation into Smoke and the uncanny images of Jordan as a pair of twins. The actor has flexed his villainous muscles before during his time portraying Erik Killmonger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Smoke and Vampire Smoke are nothing like what viewers have seen from Jordan before.
In addition to the Black Panther actor, Sinners’ star-studded cast consists of Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye, Pitch Perfect 2), Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), and many others. Inspired by Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot and the Mississippi lore of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil, the upcoming movie marks a very personal project for Coogler, who decided to bring his late uncle’s love of blues to the big screen.

Sinners showcases Michael B. Jordan’s versatility as an actor. Even from the trailer, it’s not hard to see how his role in the movie draws similarities to his past roles while leading him in a completely new direction. Smoke has a sinister side, but unlike Killmonger, who is more of a villain than someone with a connection to pure evil, the character gets under your skin. With Sinners hitting home for Coogler and the lead parts being written specifically for Jordan, it won’t be a surprise if the upcoming vampire-laced horror turns out to be their best collaboration to date.
