The Spectacular Spider-Man showrunner Greg Weisman responds to his character showing up in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for a cameo appearance. Despite being canceled after only two seasons, The Spectacular Spider-Man is getting a comeback of sorts. A new poster for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was recently released, hinting at the many new Spider-Variants popping up in the story. Spider-Verse writer Chris Miller confirmed a fan’s theory that the Spectacular Spider-Man was included on the poster, suggesting a cameo is on the way.
There is already much excitement around seeing the short-lived iteration of the web-slinger be included in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Thus far, Josh Keaton, who voiced the titular lead, hasn’t said anything about the supposed cameo. However, Weisman, who was The Spectacular Spider-Man‘s showrunner and creator, is a little skeptical.Twitter users have sent Weisman the poster and numerous questions about his Peter Parker seemingly appearing in the film. While thinking the poster is neat, Weisman isn’t certain if the Spectacular Spider-Man is actually in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Check out several of his responses below:
Is Spectacular Spider-Man Actually In Spider-Verse 2?
As Weisman stated himself, he has no involvement with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, nor did he expect to be brought on for the story. With that said, there are two ways to look at The Spectacular Spider-Man creator’s comments regarding whether the character is actually in the film. Since Weisman didn’t work on it in any creative capacity, he wouldn’t know for sure if Keaton’s Peter shows up in the movie. Sony wouldn’t have to tell him that they were using The Spectacular Spider-Man character, although giving him a heads-up would’ve been a nice touch.
However, Weisman’s comments are not entirely inaccurate either because, technically, this Spider-Man is confirmed to be on the poster. Miller never said specifically that Keaton’s web-slinger will actually show up physically in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The new poster could, by all means, be a visual tribute to the larger Spider-Verse. Rather than promising that every single character will actually show up in the movie, Keaton’s animated hero may have been featured as a subtle nod to The Spectacular Spider-Man‘s fans and Weisman’s work. At the same time, since each Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer is already upping the stakes, it feels safe to say he is in it. It would be shocking if The Spectacular Spider-Man‘s Variant wasn’t in the actual finished product.
Whether or not this could give The Spectacular Spider-Man new momentum for a series revival is up for debate. It’s unlikely Sony is planning on bringing the Weisman-produced series back, especially after all these years. However, the variant getting a Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse cameo is still a huge opportunity for the short-lived animated series. This goes to show how inclusive the creative team is with various Spider-Man properties, both past and present iterations. If this also means that Spider-Man: The Animated Series gets a quick cameo, that would be another beloved show for the sequel to honor. Once Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse arrives in 2023, The Spectacular Spider-Man mystery and other Spidey-Variants will get its answer.
