The Crazy Rich Asians television show gets a promising update from Henry Golding, who seemingly reveals a few stars who may be returning. Based on Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians was a hit when it released in theaters in 2018, earning positive reviews and over $237 million worldwide on a budget of only $30 million. A sequel was put in the works shortly after, but a prolonged development process later put the project in doubt. In its place, a Crazy Rich Asians show entered development earlier this year.
While appearing on TODAY to promote his new movie Another Simple Favor, Golding touched upon the Crazy Rich Asians show. The actor, who played the lead romantic hero Nick in the original movie, expressed enthusiasm for the show and revealed he’s been speaking to various people about it, including Awkwafina (Peik Lin) and Gemma Chan (Astrid). Golding said:
I got the memo, somebody did come around knocking. Everybody’s excited. I was with Nora, Awkwafina, who is a fellow New Yorker, the other night, and we were discussing it. We had Adele Lim come over and visit me and Gemma in London not too long ago to discuss as to where we’re heading. We have a larger, longer-run format, we’re doing a series. We have so much more runway to really share the world you kind of had a glimpse of in Crazy Rich. We’re really excited to show more.
What This Means For The Crazy Rich Asians Show
It’s A Return To The Movie World And Cast
When the Crazy Rich Asians show was first announced, it wasn’t entirely clear whether the original movie cast would return. Director Jon M. Chu is on board as an executive producer, and Adele Lim, who co-wrote the screenplay for the movie, is also producing and acting as showrunner. Chu later seemed to indicate that the show was created as a way of exploring all the necessary characters in a format more expansive than a simple movie. That Golding has been involved in these discussions shows the Crazy Rich Asians series will continue the movie’s story.
Since Nick is the male lead, Golding’s return isn’t too surprising, but it’s also a relief to hear he’s also been talking to Awkwafina and Chan. Both actors played key supporting roles in the original movie, with Chan’s Astrid in particular having a pivotal romantic subplot established within the Crazy Rich Asians credits scene. The television show will provide the opportunity to continue all their stories and maintain the universe set up by the film.
Though Golding didn’t mention Constance Wu, there is a very good chance she will be involved as well. Wu played Rachel, Nick’s girlfriend and the ostensible main character of the movie, and since Crazy Rich Asians ended with Rachel and Nick getting engaged, it would be odd if she didn’t return alongside him. Of course, there could be a plotline where Rachel is elsewhere while Nick visits family in Singapore; with so little known at this point, anything is possible.
Our Take On The Crazy Rich Asians TV Show
This Could Be Exactly What I’ve Been Waiting For
I’ve been waiting a long time for Crazy Rich Asians 2 to get made, but thankfully it sounds like this TV show will be a fitting replacement. Though it was a delight to see Nick and Rachel’s love story get a triumphant showcase on the big screen, I mostly just want to see their arcs continue somehow, and Golding’s comments about the show are very promising. It’s clear he feels good about where Crazy Rich Asians is heading, and he’ll be present for whatever happens. The biggest question now is whether Michelle Yeoh will be back as Nick’s mom—I’m certainly crossing my fingers.
