David Fincher’s Squid Game Remake Reports Get Definitive Update From Original Show Creator

An English version of Netflix’s hit show, Squid Game, reportedly remains in development. After the runaway success of the original Korean language show, it earned a reality TV adaptation and two follow-up seasons. Squid Game season 3 is expected for a 2025 debut after season 2’s recent December 26 premiere. The reality show, The Challenge, was also renewed for another season. The most surprising production, however, remains David Fincher’s upcoming English language show, reteaming him with the streamer after House of Cards and Mindhunter, among other titles.

In an interview with TheWrap, creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk opened up about the future of the franchise. While explaining that season 3 is in development, Hwang discussed Squid Game: The Challenge and confirmed that the idea of David Fincher’s English show has not died. Netflix remains devoted to the concept, and Hwang has expressed some interest in joining the production. Check out his quote below:

I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this idea away… Maybe I’ll be in one of those projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But Season 3 is not going to be the end of the ‘Squid Game’ universe.

What This Update Means For The English Squid Game

Development Has Been Slow But Ongoing

The continued development should come as no surprise, given the immense success of the show. It quickly became Netflix’s most-watched show, earning over 100 million viewers and becoming a pop culture sensation. Season 1 earned exceptional acclaim, securing a 95% score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and an 83% audience-led Popcornmeter score. With so much praise and viewership, it was inevitable that Netflix would seek to expand the sensation, and Fincher’s upcoming series should simply continue that success, even if Squid Game season 2’s reception has been more mixed.

Season 2 will need to be a runaway success to justify expanding this franchise so quickly.

Not much word about Fincher’s show has been released. It will likely be a spin-off produced in English, expanding the reach of the games across multiple countries. Squid Game season 2’s ending proved that the games are exceptionally difficult to stop, so it is only natural that it would stretch to new countries. The United States will likely be Fincher’s target location, as a Hollywood production is the natural next step for this franchise, though England is another possibility. Squid Game: The Challenge did, after all, take place in the United Kingdom.

Our Take On Fincher’s Squid Game Spin-Off

Netflix May Be Expanding Too Quickly

Having premiered in 2021, the original show was released at a time in which theaters were struggling and streaming services were on the rise. With many competing platforms today and a slow recovery at the box office, it is no longer the same media landscape. Squid Game thrived because of Hwang’s skill, but it also came at the perfect time. With those factors no longer in play, season 2 will need to be a runaway success to justify expanding this franchise so quickly. If it is not, then Fincher’s spin-off could very well fall through in the coming months.
