Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Invincible season 3, episode 7!Invincible creator Robert Kirkman and two series stars have explained the voice behind season 3’s final villain, and why the decision for the actor was made. Invincible season 3’s cast expanded at the end of season 3, episode 7, following the events of the Invincible War. As Mark (Steven Yeun) is helping clean up cities destroyed by his multiverse variants, the Viltrumite warrior Conquest arrives to fight the protagonist for not preparing Earth to become part of the Viltrum Empire. The new villain is played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, best known for Negan in The Walking Dead.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Kirkman explained how Morgan’s role as Conquest was considered even before Invincible went into production. Yeun also mentioned how the pair previously worked on The Walking Dead together, with Morgan’s Negan killing Yeun’s Glenn during the former’s debut episode. Morgan said his new voice role would offer a “chance at redemption” for his co-star as the battle between both super-powered characters ensues. Check out what the trio had to say below:
Robert Kirkman: [Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Conquest was considered] probably since the beginning of the show’s existence…. Conquest needs a lot of nuance. There’s a tremendous amount of personality there, even though he is this giant, powerful brute that’s just wrecking things. And I knew Jeffrey could bring that…. [It was] too great not to do.
Steven Yeun: We certainly couldn’t ignore [The Walking Dead]… All I can say is that it is always a pleasure and honor to work with Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He is a great actor and human and also knows how to play a tremendous heel.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan: I was just thrilled to get to be a part of it and give Steven his chance at redemption…. I was trying to be aware of just voice inflection. It’s so easy for me to get into Negan mode after this many years.
What Morgan’s Casting As Conquest Means For The Invincible Season 3 Finale
The Intimidating Figure Has The Perfect Voice
Conquest was first hinted at in season 2, when Anissa (Shantel VanSanten) warned Mark that an even more powerful Viltrumite would arrive to check on his progress. The main hero was first tasked with making Earth part of the Viltrum Empire when Kregg (Clancy Brown) captured Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), a task he’s refused to complete. Morgan’s intimidating voice offers some semblance of Negan, but also has a gruffness of its own that makes the intergalactic warrior a uniquely menacing threat. As the final villain of Invincible season 3, he’ll likely be the show’s biggest challenger so far.

Invincible Season 3’s New Viltrumite Villain, Conquest, Explained
Conquest has finally been introduced in Invincible season 3, and here’s who the Viltrumite villain is and what his role in the show will be.
With Earth still recovering from the Invincible War, it’s unclear if Mark is going to have to take down the new Viltrumite on his own, or if other heroes will come to his aid. With Eve (Gillian Jacobs) recovering from her injuries and Rex (Jason Mantzoukas) now dead, some of his closest allies aren’t around to help him. This emphasizes what Morgan said about Yeun’s “redemption” for Glenn. While it’s a massive fight in the show’s universe that will have significant implications for Invincible season 4, it has even greater significance for those familiar with Kirkman’s other work.
It was previously believed Jonathan Banks would be portraying Conquest, but he ended up voicing Brit instead.
Our Take On Morgan’s Casting As Conquest In Invincible Season 3
A Scarily Good Choice For The Viltrumite Villain
Although Morgan’s voice was a surprising choice for Conquest, his ability to play intimidating roles makes him the perfect actor to take up the villain’s role. His major importance during the season 3 finale will no doubt make him one of Invincible‘s most memorable antagonists so far, especially arriving just after a devastating global event. With Mark angry at everything that’s happened so far, he might be able to channel enough of his rage to beat the Viltrumite.
The final episode of Invincible season 3 arrives Thursday, March 13 on Prime Video.
