Is Will & Angie’s Relationship Really Done For Good? Will Trent Showrunner Responds

Warning: Spoilers for Will Trent season 3, episode 4 below! The Will Trent co-showrunner addresses the uncertain future of Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Angie Polaski’s (Erika Christensen) relationship following the events of the latest episode of Will Trent season 3. The hit ABC procedural drama, based on Karin Slaughter’s best-selling novels, follows Atlanta-based Special Agent Will Trent as he solves crime while navigating his personal struggles. A major storyline throughout the series has been his relationship with Angie, a fellow officer and childhood best friend with whom he shares a complicated past.

Following the events of season 2, where Will arrests Angie for covering up a crime, season 3, episode 4 saw Angie declaring that she “releases” Will, making it a point that their relationship is over. Speaking with TVLine, co-showrunner Liz Helden gave insight into her mindset during the episode, suggesting that Angie’s determination to end the relationship may not be as strong as it appears. Read her full response below:

I think she wants to try. I mean, they both have a side to what happened at the end of Season 2. Her side is, “You arrested me in front of everybody,” and his side is, “I had to,” so I think that she’s trying to respect herself, and she’s really trying to let them both off the hook. You know, we all say things one day and feel differently the next day. We try. You say you’re going to change, and you stumble, so we’ll see. But I think she meant it in the moment.

What This Means For Will and Angie in Will Trent

A Relationship That Refuses to End

Will and Angie’s relationship has been a major focus point of Will Trent, with the show exploring their trauma and trust issues stemming from their shared past in the foster care system, which has created a co-dependent dynamic that’s hard for them to break. While Angie may be determined to move on, emotions are unpredictable, and their shared history makes a permanent split difficult to imagine. Season 3 poses a new dilemma for the pair, forcing them to consider if they are actually meant to be together or if they are caught in a cycle neither can break.

Our Take on Will & Angie’s Future

Their Relationship Is Constantly Evolving

Ramón Rodríguez as Will Trent and Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski in Will Trent season 2, episode 7.

The complicated relationship between Will and Angie is one of the most compelling aspects of Will Trent. While their bond is undeniable, it is also fundamentally broken, making it difficult to predict whether they will actually end up together. Helden’s comments suggest that the show is leaving room for character growth, allowing them to evolve naturally rather than forcing a certain romantic outcome. Regardless of where their story goes, Will Trent continues to deliver an emotional drama that keeps their fans engaged.
