MobLand’s Debut Rotten Tomatoes Score Is In — Is Tom Hardy & Guy Ritchie’s Reunion Worth The 17-Year Wait?

Tom Hardy and Guy Ritchie have gotten back together for MobLand and critics look to be enjoying it with its debut Rotten Tomatoes score. The show, which is executive produced and directed by Ritchie, revolves around a growing war between the Harrigans and Stevensons, two powerful crime families in London, and Hardy’s fixer, Harry Da Souza, as he’s hired by the former to help defend their empire. Alongside Hardy, the ensemble MobLand cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine, Joanne Froggatt, Lara Pulver and Anson Boon.

With the show’s premiere right around the corner, reviews are coming in for MobLand and Rotten Tomatoes has its debut critics score. At the time of writing, with 14 reviews collected, the crime drama has a 71% approval rating from critics on the review aggregate, with an average of 6.4/10. While the score is likely to drop in the coming days, it’s still a promising start for the show.

What The Debut Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For MobLand

Hardy & Ritchie’s Reunion May Be A Winner

Though it may not be the highest score of Hardy or Ritchie’s filmographies, MobLand‘s debut Rotten Tomatoes score is a promising sign of how the show will be received by the public upon its premiere. It’s also a welcome shift from Hardy and Ritchie’s first collaboration on the 2008 crime comedy RocknRolla, which holds a barely fresh 60% from critics and 71% from audiences. Despite hopes for a trilogy, the movie’s mixed critical and commercial performance has also not seen the two further explore that world, making the show their first reunion in 17 years.

The show’s positive reception also continues Ritchie’s recent success trend on Rotten Tomatoes with both his films and TV shows. In the wake of the back-to-back critical misfires of Aladdin and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, all but one of Ritchie’s projects in the past six years have netted Fresh scores on the platform, including his first proper venture into television, Netflix’s The Gentlemen. Check out how MobLand‘s current score compares to Ritchie’s recent positive trend on Rotten Tomatoes in the chart below:

If audiences prove to be as receptive as they often are to Ritchie’s projects, particularly as they’re generally more positive than critics, MobLand could very well have a solid future ahead of it. The Gentlemen getting a season 2 renewal has shown Ritchie’s willingness to continue exploring the realm of television, particularly when paired with his Young Sherlock show in the works, while Hardy signing on for a rare TV role could point to his interest in its characters and longevity.

Our Take On MobLand’s Debut Rotten Tomatoes Score

Everyone Loves A Good Gangster Show

Given the score comes from a little over a dozen reviews, I do think MobLand‘s Rotten Tomatoes critic score is bound to dip a little further, likely into the 60s. However, since many of the reviews are leaning broadly positive, it does seem like Ritchie and creator Ronan Bennett have struck the right London gangster mix that the show will be entertaining at the very least, and with Paramount+ enjoying success in the genre with Tulsa King, this could just be the start of more.

MobLand premieres on Paramount+ on Sunday, March 30.
