Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Rookie season 7, episode 5!The Rookie star Mekia Cox has explained Nyla’s tense confrontation with a potential serial killer in season 7, episode 5, revealing why she instigated it. The episode saw the detective confront a vending machine operator named Liam Glasser (Seth Gabel), who she believes is a serial killer that previously attacked her in an abandoned building. The Rookie season 7, episode 5 also sees her confront him, privately insisting she knows he’s guilty, and will do everything in her power to bring him to justice.
Speaking with TVLine, Cox unpacked Nyla’s intense confrontation with Glasser in The Rookie season 7, episode 5, explaining how the move was a purposeful way of letting him know he’s being watched. When asked if the suspect is going to be akin to her Joker, she laughed and affirmed it, saying the detective isn’t going to rest until she’s certain justice for his actions has been served. Check out what Cox had to say below:
I don’t think so. Nyla is very calculated, she knows what she’s doing. She’s doing these things on purpose, because she really doesn’t want him out there murdering again. She doesn’t want any more victims, so she does that to scare him and let him know, “Yes, you are being watched.”
[Responding to whether Glasser is Nyla’s Joker] Yes. [Laughs] Yes, very much so. He is constantly on her mind. She is focused on getting him, and she’s not going to feel comfortable until she does.
What Nyla’s Confrontation With Glasser Means For The Rookie Season 7
She’s Certain He’s The Culprit They’re Looking For
Nyla’s confrontation with Glasser may be dangerous for her, but Cox’s viewpoint indicates the detective is playing it smart with how she approaches the situation. However, she’ll have to contend with some difficulties, potentially even from other characters in The Rookie, as someone else has already confessed to the serial killings. Even though the path ahead might be difficult, her non-nonsense attitude and attention to detail in cases like this means she has a good idea about how to approach the situation to prove she’s right.

The Rookie has been struggling to find its next Big Bad for many seasons, but a villain introduced in season 7, episode 4 is the perfect candidate.
On the other hand, The Rookie season 7, episode 5 also proved the show is willing to quickly resolve its big cases. Jason (Steve Kazee) also returned this episode, only to be killed by Malvado (Jimmy Gonzales) in an unceremonious fashion. While it seems like Nyla has a long road ahead of her in a mental battle with Glasser, that resolution could come quicker than anticipated depending on how future events unfold. But, with plenty of drama able to unfold because of the second suspect in play, the struggle between the two could go on for many episodes to come.
Nyla has been a main character in The Rookie since season 2.
