The White Lotus star Michelle Monaghan is now ruling out one season 3 fan theory. Season 3 is currently following the Ratliff family and a trio of long-time friends: Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), Laurie (Carrie Coons), and Kate (Leslie Bibb). In every season, the first episode reveals a dead body, indicating that at least one of The White Lotus characters will meet a grisly end. Season 3 is no different, showing a floating dead body after the sound of a flurry of gunshots in the opening moments and leaving them to muse on what’s just happened off-camera.
While speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Monaghan set the record straight on a popular fan theory that monkeys are responsible for this season’s death since they appear in the episode. The star outright debunks the monkey theory, which can be read below:
You know, I’ve just got to debunk a theory out here. Guys, the monkeys did not do it! People have gone ape s— thinking that.
What This Means For The White Lotus Season 3
A Popular Theory Has Been Debunked
One of the most exciting aspects of The White Lotus is trying to piece together who will die by the end of the season and who might be involved in said death. It’s typically assumed that if a person is killing someone in the show, it’s a human. However, this popular fan theory posits that a monkey could grab a gun and begin aimlessly shooting around the hotel, ending with a floating body in the water. Alternatively, some viewers think that the monkeys will attack a guest, leading someone to fire off the gun and inadvertently kill a character.

Even though she suspects that he killed Tanya, the terrified Belinda still has not notified the police about Greg in The White Lotus season 3.
Monaghan’s quickness to shut down the monkey indicates that season 3 will answer the question of “who died, and how?” in a completely different way. There are several working theories as to which characters may pick up the gun and kill each other—or themselves—but none are as silly as “the monkey theory.” Regardless of the lack of primates involved, season 3 is shaping up to be an enthralling watch that has eagle-eyed viewers locking into every detail.
Our Take On This White Lotus Theory Being Shut Down
It Wouldn’t Be Interesting If A Monkey Was The Killer
The White Lotus is filled with exciting twists and turns, primarily concerning the mystery of who died and who is responsible for the death. In season 1, Armand (Murray Bartlett) was stabbed by Shane (Jake Lacy) and in season 2, Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) died after falling off of a boat filled with the nefarious allies of her then-husband Greg (Jon Gries). Both of these deaths were exciting, original, and surprising.
The death in The White Lotus season 3 would simply be less interesting if the monkeys were responsible for the gunshots. The show is heavily focused on the hotel guests’ interpersonal dynamics, and shoving the monkeys in as a last-minute, unexpected twist would be a waste of the relationships that have developed throughout the season. The monkeys killing someone in The White Lotus season 3 would not only feel unrealistic but also like a cop-out.
