With the return of Severance fast approaching, lead star Adam Scott debunks a popular theory about Lumon Industries. Severance season 2 will premiere on Apple TV+ on January 17. After a hiatus that stretched on for nearly three years, the buzz from critics has been strongly positive. The consensus suggests that the upcoming episodes either maintains the quality of the first installment or serves as a notable improvement. But despite their enthusiasm, critics caution that answers may not be forthcoming.
In a video for Entertainment Weekly, Scott is at least willing to discard one major fan theory. The cast of Severance was responding to online speculation about the thriller’s various mysteries and generally remaining coy. But when it came to the possibility that Lumon Industries was cloning people, the Mark Scout actor was fairly direct. His co-star, Patricia Arquette, who plays Harmony Cobel, was even more straightforward in debunking the possibility. Read the responses, and check out the video, below:
Scott: “This sounds like what Lumon would be doing in a super boring version of Severance.”
Arquette: “You are very far off and wrong.”
It’s Not What You’d Think
The cast of Severance, including Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, and John Turturro, are not going to be spilling their beans on what their innies are up to. But the fact that Scott and Arquette were so willing to dismiss the cloning theory and the purpose of the goats, encouragingly suggests that creator Dan Erickson, director Ben Stiller, and the rest of the team are not going for the most obvious sci-fi tropes.

Severance: What Does The Room Of Baby Goats Mean?
The room appears in Severance episode 5, but it happens in such an odd way that its meaning could become a mystery that will not be revealed soon.
What they are going for, however, and what is happening at Lumon, likely won’t be completely clear just yet. The sci-thriller is expanding, welcoming new supporting actors and putting a bigger focus on returning faces that may have had smaller parts during season 1. As it makes a more aggressive push to attract subscribers, Apple TV+ is betting that interest in the series and its mysteries will carry on for the foreseeable future.
Our Take On Severance Theories
It’s Important But It’s Not Everything
Apple recently offered a free weekend for potential subscribers, using the sci-fi thriller as a key advertising point. Severance season 1 will also be available for free on the Roku streaming platform until January 19. This is all a show of faith that the show’s excellent acting, unsettling imagery, and confident direction will be the hook that brings in new fans. That matters more, in the end, than any particular theory.
