Severance Season 2 Rotten Tomatoes Score Debut Beats Near-Perfect Season 1

Severance
season 2 has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, and the score beats that of the near-perfect season 1. Created by Dan Erickson, the hit Apple TV+ mystery series premiered in 2022, following Adam Scott’s Mark Scout, an employee at Lumon Industries who has had his work memories surgically separated from his personal ones. After a glowing response to season 1 and repeated delays to the sophomore outing, expectations for Severance season 2 are high, and the first reviews for the new season have suggested that it will be worth the wait.

Following the lifting of the review embargo, Rotten Tomatoes now reveals that Severance season 2 has debuted to a perfect 100% score with 33 reviews, as of writing. This score means that season 2 is now ahead of season 1, which has a 97% score with 116 reviews. It’s worth noting, however, that season 2’s score could fluctuate as more reviews are added.

What Severance’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For Season 2

What Critics Are Saying About The Apple TV+ Show’s Return

It’s now been three years since the Severance season 1 finale, and that’s a long time to wait between seasons, especially given the intricacies of the show’s storylines and characters. The initial response, however, suggests that this long wait could be worth it. Reviews have praised the show’s sophomore outing for offering up plenty of what viewers loved about season 1, while also answering some key questions and revealing more about Lumon. In his review for Screen Rant, Graeme Guttman writes:

Season 2 pulls off this balancing act once again, zooming out while retaining a laser focus on characters and themes that have a deep emotional core despite the show’s chilly exterior. Severance pulls the curtain back on Lumon as it begins to reveal the heart of its story — Gemma, Mark, and Helly, a twisted love triangle that only escalates in season 2.

In addition to its strong critics’ score, season 1 has an impressive 88% score from audiences. The Severance season 2 reviews, combined with its strong critics’ score, would suggest that season 2’s audience score might end up beating its predecessor as well. An audience score, however, won’t arrive until after the show’s return.

Our Take On Severance Season 2’s Rotten Tomatoes Score

The Apple TV+ Show’s Future Could Be Bright

With Erickson having expressed interest in making Severance season 3 and beyond, season 2’s perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is a promising sign that additional seasons will come to fruition. Though it will be viewership that ultimately determines whether Apple renews the show or not, awards potential and critical acclaim can also be a major driver regarding a show’s future.

If Severance season 2 goes over just as well with audiences as it is with critics, that could ultimately make for an even more frustrating wait for season 3. Should the show be renewed and season 2 ends on another cliffhanger, another two or three-year wait could be excruciating, especially if the new episodes are of high quality. It remains to be seen how audiences respond to Severance‘s new season, but it’s certainly looking like one to be excited about.

Severance season 2 premieres January 17, 2025, on Apple TV+.
