Squid Game Season 2 Makes Netflix History As The Third Most Viewed Series Of All Time

Squid Game season 2 has set yet more viewership records on Netflix, as the show continues to become one of the platform’s most successful projects. Debuting on Netflix in September 2021, the Korean dystopian survival thriller was created by Hwang Dong-hyuk and follows the story of 456 players, all facing financial hardships, who compete in a series of deadly children’s games for a prize fund of ₩45.6 billion. Squid Game season 1 was a global success, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series ever, and season 2 has been continuing the show’s trend of setting records.

According to Netflix Tudum, Squid Game season 2 is continuing the success from the debut season and has set another major viewership record. The series currently sits at No. 2 on the streaming platform’s list of Most Popular Non-English Shows of All-Time, with total views of 152,500,000, and viewing hours totaling 1,093,000,000. These stats also mean the show has surpassed Stranger Things season 4, to officially become the third most-watched program in Netflix history, behind only Squid Games season 1 and Wednesday season 1.

What This Means For Squid Game Season 2 Long-Term

The Follow-Up Season Could Surpass Its Predecessor

Whilst Squid Game season 2 is not at the level of season 1 just yet, there is a lot to be excited about, and the future looks promising for the series. Whilst there was a big gap between season 1 and season 2, it clearly has not done any harm to the audience’s appetite, and season 2 is likely not done with setting records and pushing boundaries just yet. It could even work out that the second season eventually surpasses the first, though this would require more than 125 million more views in order to achieve this feat.

Of course, the show’s second season has only been available to stream since Boxing Day 2024, and will no doubt enjoy strong legs into the summer. So there is a good chance that the series could continue to set records, and that season 2’s viewership figures could continue to creep up. Whilst the consensus has found season 2 to be less compelling than season 1, a fresh cast of characters might make it more difficult for audiences to connect with them in the way they did in season 1.

Squid Game is one of the best shows that Netflix has ever produced, and there is no doubt the series will continue to achieve long-term success. It has been confirmed that Squid Game season 3 will be the final season of the show, and this is the season that could smash every existing record. Squid Game season 1’s viewership record is one that may never be broken, but there is no doubt season 2 has a good chance of achieving this.
