Stranger Things showrunners Ross and Matt Duffer confirm that season 5 will be released in 2025. Their comments come after reports of Stranger Things season 5’s release being delayed. The final season of the hit Netflix series has been eagerly awaited since season 4 was released in 2022. Season 4 ended on several cliffhangers that still need to be addressed, including the fate of Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), who was last seen in a coma after nearly being killed by Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
As per Collider, while speaking during a panel at SCAD TVfest, the Duffer brothers shared an update on where the series is at during season 5’s post-production process: “We’re focused on visual effects sequences right now. We started back in January, so it’s going well. We’re actually ahead of schedule, which is rare for us, so that’s great.” In terms of what this means for Stranger Things season 5’s release window, they confirmed that “It’s coming this year,” while clarifying that “It’s still a long way away.”
What This Means For Stranger Things Season 5
It Poised To Have A Late 2025 Release
The Duffer brothers’ comments are a promising sign that Stranger Things season 5 will still debut in 2025. As they explain, being “ahead of schedule” is a rarity in the entertainment industry, and it speaks to how well the post-production process is moving. Their comments about the release “still [being] a long way away” make it clear that the series will not be coming to Netflix any time soon in 2025 and will likely not be available until the fall or even the early winter months.

8 Great Stranger Things Season 5 Theories, Ranked By How Likely They Are To Come True
There are some great theories about Stranger Things season 5 out there, but some seem more likely to come true during the final episodes than others.
Between Stranger Things‘ Upside Down and characters like Vecna, it is a visual effects-heavy show that takes time to get right. With this being the final season, and an epic battle expected between the human characters and the creatures of the Upside Down, Stranger Things season 5 likely requires the most in-depth visual effects work yet. Season 5 took nearly an entire year to film, and visual effects are among the many elements that still need to be handled in the ongoing post-production.
A 2025 Release Is Great As Long As The Final Season Is Not Rushed
Now that both the Duffer brothers and Netflix have said season 5 will be released this year, the 2025 release window seems more likely to happen, and it will be disappointing if it gets pushed to 2026. At the same time, it will be more disappointing if the final season does not live up to expectations, especially after more than three years passing since Stranger Things season 4’s ending. It seems as though the best of both worlds can be achieved with a late 2025 release that will also be a satisfying conclusion for Stranger Things.
