Creed 3 Box Office Headed For A Rocky Franchise Best Opening Weekend

Creed 3’s box office projections have Michael B. Jordan’s movie headed for the biggest opening weekend in the history of the Rocky franchise.

Creed 3 is headed for the biggest opening weekend in the history of the Rocky franchise. As the ninth overall installment in the Rocky franchise and the third in the spinoff series that started in 2015, Creed 3 finds Michael B. Jordan’s eponymous pugilist stepping into the ring with a childhood friend and ex-convict, Damian Anderson (played by Jonathan Majors). The film is a notable deviation for the franchise, as it is the first not to feature its creator Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, and, following in his former co-star’s footsteps, Jordan makes his directorial debut with Creed 3.

Now, with Creed 3‘s release date right around the corner, the first box-office projections have surfaced. Per Deadline, Creed 3 is headed for an opening weekend in the $38 million to $40 million range. If Creed 3 opens to anything above $35.5 million, it would be a record-high debut for the Rocky franchise.

How Creed 3’s Opening Weekend Projections Compare To The Rocky Franchise

Creed 3‘s opening weekend being projected as the highest in the Rocky franchise’s history is a true testament to the spinoff series’ upward trajectory. However, as is always the case when comparing box office numbers decades apart, inflation is also a factor. In 1985, Rocky IV grossed just shy of $20 million in its opening weekend, which when adjusted for inflation, would be around $55 million today and a high for the Rocky franchise.

When comparing Creed 3‘s projected opening weekend to its two predecessors in the spinoff series, inflation is not as much of a factor. The first two Creed movies were released in 2015 and 2018, both around the Thanksgiving holiday, opening to $29 million and $35 million respectively over the weekend. If Creed 3‘s box office projections hold true, its opening weekend will surpass its predecessor as the highest in the Rocky franchise’s history. With Creed 3‘s reviews trending overwhelmingly positive, that is looking like a distinct possibility.
