Director David Ayer clarifies his Twitter comments on DC Universe fans and filmmakers’ passion and then criticizes the toxic community. With all the major shakeups happening at DC Studios and Warner Bros., there was bound to be a major reaction from the public. James Gunn and Peter Safran have yet to announce their overarching new plan, but so far, the things that have come out have either excited, intrigued or angered the community. One of the major worries of certain fans is that Zack Snyder’s “Snyderverse” would be dismantled. Ayer had previously struggled over the knowledge that his cut of Suicide Squad was probably never coming out, and this decision cements it.
Following Gunn tweeting about how he and Safran were aware of the significant backlash that was coming, Ayer responded by proclaiming how negativity was a sign of how powerful the DC characters and their fandom were. When a media outlet wrote a piece on his comments, suggesting that he was praising negative behavior, Ayer responded again by clarifying his remarks with “on no planet do I control hate, trolling, toxicity. Can everyone just play nice?” When a user attempted to accuse him of doing just that, Ayer again defended himself and scolded them for taking his quote out of context. Read his full tweets below:
Are Online DC Fan Movements Going Too Far?
Ayer has had a history of trouble with DC. Signing on to direct Suicide Squad in 2014, the film was plagued by behind-the-scenes last-minute changes and reshoots. The film notoriously changed its marketing campaign following the negative reception Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice received when it was criticized for being too dark. This caused Ayer’s film to feel disjointed and oddly edited in some areas. With Snyder’s cut of Justice League released on HBO Max, fans hoped that Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad would get the same treatment. However, in the years since, Ayer had apparently lost interest in rectifying his film, and Gunn was brought on board to reboot it as The Suicide Squad.
Fans have been very vocal about the state of the DC films and want nothing more than to see more cohesion and their favorite characters adapted. While their voices resulted in the creation of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, this backfired on the studio as it led to other false promises that the studio could not fulfill. This resulted in fans clinging to whatever was left of Snyder’s universe even though the film series was not succeeding as well as Warner Bros. had hoped. Now that Gunn and Safran have taken over, this has resulted in fans angrily decrying the new leads without seeing what they have in store.
The bottom line is that the DC Universe always had its problems and needs to be dealt with. Ayer has moved on from wanting to salvage anything from his cut of Suicide Squad, and it looks like he wants his fans to take the hint and move on as well. This toxic behavior has blinded those from seeing all the possibilities that can come from rebooting the DC movie franchise. If fans can just put down their torches and pitchforks for one moment and see what Gunn and Safran are up to, they might be surprised and even see that newer might be better.
