Ghostbusters Afterlife 2 Set Photo Reveals Return To Classic Firehouse

Director Jason Reitman shares a new image from the set of Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, revealing a return to the classic firehouse setting.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 producer Jason Reitman shares a new behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming sequel, providing a peek at the return of the franchise’s classic firehouse. After the franchise first got its start back in 1984, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife served as a legacy sequel, introducing new characters to carry the story forward while also featuring a return from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. After that movie’s success, it was announced that a sequel would be moving forward, with franchise newcomer Gil Kenan serving as director.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2‘s release date is still a long way off, with the movie not expected to hit theaters until December, but a recent Instagram post from Reitman provides a behind-the-scenes look at the return of an iconic franchise location.

While the photo doesn’t reveal too much about what audiences can expect from the upcoming sequel, the New York City firehouse featured prominently in the first two Ghostbusters movies as the base of operations for the titular team. After a run-down version of the location appeared briefly in the soft reboot’s post-credits scene, Reitman’s photo would suggest it might be getting a fresh coat of paint in the sequel.

What To Expect From The Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel

The original Ghostbusters in Ghostbusters Afterlife

While the most recent franchise did feature the return of Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz, Murray’s Peter Venkman, and Hudson’s Zeddemore, the film was mostly focused on a new group of characters. The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel will seemingly continue this trend, with newcomers like Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), Callie (Carrie Coon), and Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd) all expected to return. While the newer characters will seemingly remain a strong focus in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, both Hudson and Aykroyd have expressed their interest in returning as well.

As isn’t unusual for a legacy sequel, Ghostbusters: Afterlife relied heavily on franchise nostalgia during its own story, a move that was met with some frustration from critics. The return of the iconic firehouse would suggest that the upcoming sequel will once again be tapping into audiences’ love of the original movies, potentially in an even bigger way. Whether a balance can be struck between honoring the old elements of the Ghostbusters franchise while also blazing new ground, however, remains to be seen.

As far as story details, nothing has been revealed about the follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife just yet. The most recent film’s post-credits scene does include a somewhat ominous tease at the very end, with the firehouse’s ghost containment unit light blinking red, potentially a hint that the trapped ghosts will be escaping out into the world. That being said, it’s also possible that Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 will introduce an entirely new threat for the Spengler family to face off against.
