Screenwriter Kevin Williamson reveals how Randy could have evolved as a character if he didn’t die in Scream 2. Played by Jamie Kennedy, Randy debuted in the first Scream movie. A video store clerk who was obsessed with horror, Randy served as the primary voice of Scream‘s meta elements, laying out the rules to surviving in a horror movie. Randy survives the first movie, going on to college with Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott in the second film. Randy tragically dies in what Williamson has said is one of his franchise regrets.
Now, in a recent interview with Collider, Williamson even revealed that not only does he regret killing Randy, but he wishes that the character could’ve stuck around and evolved in the third, fourth, and fifth films. This evolution includes a potentially changed perspective on the horror genre and how he would have processed his trauma from the events of the films. Check out what Williamson had to say below.
“I think everyone I know would say Randy because he kind of met an untimely demise in the middle of the film. Had I known that there was gonna be a 3, 4, 5, that it was gonna go on, I would have loved to have had him be a legacy character. I think he could have evolved with the state of horror through the last 20-something years, and I think you could have done a lot with him in terms of who he was and who his character is, and how it informed his life and the trauma of what really happened versus his love for the horror films. Would that always be? Would he turn against them? What would happen? And I kind of thought that would have been an interesting character to play with.”
What We Know About Scream 6
While it isn’t likely that Scream 6 will be introducing resurrection to the franchise, it’s unlikely that Randy would return for the film even if it did. 2022’s Scream already introduced a Randy replacement, making a resurrection as pointless as it would be disappointing. Randy’s death was a game-changing moment for the franchise, proving that no one would be safe, even if they survived the original film. Striking that monumental moment out of the franchise would make every death feel pointless going forward.
Thankfully, Scream 6 has its own interesting incoming storylines, even without the return of old and beloved characters. While many details about Scream 6 have yet to be released, the cast has already been announced. The film will feature Melissa Barrera’s Sam, Wednesday star Jenna Ortega’s Tara, Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed, Mason Gooding’s Chad Meeks-Martin, Jasmin Savoy-Brown’s Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Courtney Cox’s Gale Weathers. Unfortunately, Sidney Prescott will not be returning, due to a contract dispute with Campbell, but with so many familiar characters in play, Ghostface will certainly have his pick of victims.
After it was announced that Scream 6 would release earlier in 2023, the film is slated for a March 10 release. The film will feature a new killer under the mask and will take place in New York City. Without Sidney or Randy, the film will be missing out on a key part of the franchise, so it remains to be seen if it will be able to hold its own compared to other Scream films. Still, Scream has always been about the same themes of character work and killing, so it should be able to survive the loss of Sidney.
