Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi wants to see Shazam team up with Green Lantern for a new The Brave and the Bold project. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the first DC movie to hit theaters since James Gunn took over DC Studios and announced a number of projects for DC’s Chapter One slate. Although Shazam’s future is unclear, Levi is hopeful, and director David F. Sandberg has implied that the success of the new movie will be a deciding factor in the hero’s DCU future.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Levi reveals that Green Lantern would be his pick for a Shazam: The Brave and the Bold team-up. He explains why Green Lantern and Shazam could be a complementary pair. Levi also breaks down the potentially hilarious dynamic he believes Billy would have with every DC hero.
Zachary Levi: I think that no matter who Shazam or Billy is teamed up with, he’s going to be the puppy dog. It’s like, “Wow, this is so cool. Wow, what are we doing?” Right? And they’ll end up being more of a straight man to Billy’s silliness.
I actually think Green Lantern would be a really fun character. The Lantern Corps; their abilities are so endless almost with their ability to create a manifest. And I think that, coupled with the child delight in Billy, [means] we would have so much fun.
Shazam & Green Lantern Is The Perfect Addition To A The Brave And The Bold Series
Gunn has announced two projects that could make this idea a reality, specifically Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Lanterns. The Green Lantern series will take a True Detective approach, following Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Batman: The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman to the DCU, pairing him with his son, Damian Wayne, as his sidekick Robin.
DC’s The Brave and the Bold comic series features some amazing team-ups, including characters one might not expect. Gunn could follow this example with a series of movies featuring classic partnerships from Green Arrow and Black Canary to Supergirl and Wonder Woman, but he could also use it as an opportunity to throw together truly wild pairings. Levi’s pitch of Shazam teaming with Green Lantern could be the perfect fit for this, with magic and sci-fi coming together for an epic adventure.
A partnership between Shazam and the Green Lantern has a ton of potential for comedy, as well as offering an exploration of fate with both Shazam and Green Lanterns being chosen by a larger power to become heroes and genre-blending between magic and cosmic powers. Billy’s more fun-loving, youthful sensibility could be an especially interesting dynamic with the DCU’s Green Lantern if he were to team up with Hal Jordan or John Stewart after Lanterns. A Brave and the Bold series could be just the ticket to expanding these heroes beyond their corner of the DCU. It could also be an opportunity to build relationships between different heroes long before reforming the Justice League in a way that builds out the world like never before.
